Archdeacon Christopher Hawthorn died suddenly in Harrogate on Saturday 22nd February.
His funeral will take place at Christ Church, Harrogate at 12.00 noon on Friday 21st March.
Chris served his entire ordained ministry in the Diocese of York. After ordination training at Ripon Hall, Oxford, Chris was ordained Deacon in 1962 and served as Curate for St James, Sutton in Holderness from 1962 to 1966. Following his Ordination as Priest in 1963, Chris held successive Incumbencies as Vicar of St Nicholas, Kingston upon Hull (1966 to 1972), Vicar of Christ Church, East Coatham (1972 to 1979) and Vicar of St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough (1979 to 1991). Chris also served as Rural Dean for Scarborough from 1982 to 1991.
Chris was appointed as Archdeacon of Cleveland in 1991. Having been installed as a Canon of York in 1987 in recognition of his parish and deanery ministry in the diocese, Chris subsequently (as Archdeacon) became an ex officio member of the Minster’s College of Canons in 2000. Chris retired as Archdeacon and from full-time ministry in 2001, but remained active in the diocese for many years afterwards, holding Permission to Officiate in the diocese from 2001 to 2024.
