Rural Mission and Ministry

Find prayer, support and resources for ministers serving rural parishes.

The Diocese of York is one of the Church of England’s geographically largest and most rural dioceses. Churches in rural communities hold both great opportunities and real challenges, while no two parishes are the same. Through Living Christ’s Story, we are called to respond to the distinct needs of each place, joining in God’s mission of love through churches that are present, trusted, and rooted in community life.

In rural areas, clergy and lay ministers often serve across several villages and churches across wide areas. Many churches are also part of farming communities, where the land shapes local identity and everyday life. Financial pressures, regulation, animal disease, weather, isolation, loneliness, mental health challenges, succession questions, and wider uncertainty can all take their toll. In these places, the Church has an important role in noticing, praying, encouraging, and signposting people to support.
